How Changing Your Mindset Can Change Your Circumstances
It’s February and you have totally forgotten about your resolutions and goals right? You’re uninspired and you can’t seem to keep motivated? What if I told you that YOU are the only thing stopping YOU from achieving your goals?
I remember when I just got my job at Eservice (a call centre). I wasn’t working for a while before that so I was hungry and determined to make up for lost time. I wrote down the things that I wanted to achieve and the timeframe I needed it done by. I was about 20 years old at the time but I wasn’t anywhere near where I wanted to be. I knew something had to change. I remember reading Alvin Day’s book around that time, If Caterpillars Can Fly-So Can I and it talked about the universal laws to achieve and prosper. I remember thinking I needed to CHANGE MY MINDSET and CHANGE MY LIFE and this new job was going to get me there.
Changing my life wasn’t so easy. I had to work long hours, be extra nice on my phone calls with customers, try to make my phone calls longer and avoid getting those dreaded supervisor calls, and trying to meet the quality assurance ( the people who listen to the calls and give you a grade depending on how the call went), so there wasn’t any deductions from the money I worked so hard for. The first month wasn’t so bad at the call centre. By the end of the year I was able to send myself back to college, buy myself a new blackberry ( that was the must have phone back then) and take care of myself. I bought a bed, a tv, a dresser, and a laptop. The more I crossed off the things on my list the more empowered I became and ever since then I have been making lists and getting things done. Nice story right? So what does that have to do with you?
Well this story is not the only story out there. There are so many persons who realise that they are not in the position that they want to be in. They disappear and then a couple years down the line they are rich. How? I just said it. They realise they’re not where they want to be, they eliminate distractions, make a few changes to their mindset and habits, develop a new routine, work hard and then the success comes. Just look at every success story. What is the common theme?
How can you change your mindset? Here are a 7 ways you can change your mindset.
Learn to be more grateful. Sometimes we are making progress but because the progress is too small we don’t see it is as progress. Stop that way of thinking. Every day, take 5 minutes of your day and just say 5 things you are thankful for out loud. Some people keep a notepad and write down the things they are grateful for everyday and at the end of the year they read them over. I suppose it must be a really good feeling. I started mine this year so I will let you know how it goes.
Take those negative words out of your vocabulary. Ever heard of the saying “Be careful of what you put out in the universe.” or “There is power in the tongue”? You have to be mindful indeed. Whatever you speak is what you think, whatever you think you are. So if you think you can’t then you won’t. If you think you can means you believe in yourself and you will find a way to get there.
Challenges will come. That’s just life. I remember when I was doing my degree in Business there was this one subject called CALCULUS. I never hated a subject like how I hated it. Uuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggghhhhhhhhh! I hated the teacher, I hated everything about it. Guess what…. I failed. Did I let that stop me? No, I tried again. When I passed it i was so happy. Not the best grade in the world but I passed it :) Don’t let the obstacles and the challenges get you down for long. It’s ok to feel sad in the moment but brush yourself off and try again.
Be around positive people. Do you have friends who are always negative? Get rid of those friends. Stay far away from them. RUN! That’s not the kind of company you want. Be around friends who encourage you. Not the one’s who always tell you “your dreams don’t make sense” or “it won’t work.” Don’t choose friends who always love to gossip, talk bad about people, who always partying, who always in debt, who just want to be Instagram famous. Be around people who uplift you, who make you want to level up, who talk about their goals, who encourage you, who talk about investments.
What is your why? What’s going to keep you motivated? Why are you trying to change in the first place? For me I am not happy with where I am in life and I know I can do better. I know there is more out there for me. I have goals and things I want to achieve before 30. I want to retire early. I want to work hard now so I can relax when I get older. I hate to see old people working. I want to be able to relax when I get old and enjoy the rest of my years on earth and not have to worry.
Embrace change. Changing your mindset means you are going to be doing something you’ve never done before. It means you are going to have to develop new habits. Embrace the change, do it again and again. Sometimes you will slip into your old ways but always remember why you want to change in the first place. Keep embracing the new change until it becomes a habit.
Have some fun! Go out on adventures, take pictures and avoid stress.
